Bekasi \u2014 A spate of snatch thefts targeting an elderly nasi uduk\nvendor in the Pondok Gede area of Bekasi, which had gone viral on social\nmedia, has finally been solved.<\/p>\n
The Mobile Criminal Investigation Sub-directorate (Subdit Resmob) of\nthe Jakarta Metropolitan Police (Polda Metro Jaya) has arrested the\nperpetrator, who had been specifically targeting elderly female traders\nas his victims. The breakthrough followed two police reports \u2014\nLP\/B\/10\/I\/2026 dated 5 January 2026 and LP\/B\/30\/II\/2026 dated 20\nFebruary 2026 \u2014 filed within the jurisdiction of Pondok Gede Sector\nPolice, Bekasi City Metropolitan Police.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis case falls under the criminal offence of Theft with Violence as\nstipulated in Article 479 of the Criminal Code, with the modus operandi\nof snatching bags belonging to female nasi uduk vendors,\u201d said Head of\nUnit V Resmob at Polda Metro Jaya, Adjunct Commissioner Arief Ryzki\nWicaksana, on Tuesday, 23 February 2026.<\/p>\n
The first incident occurred on Friday, 2 January 2026 at\napproximately 08:00 Western Indonesian Time on Jalan Sosial No.\u00a018 RT\n002\/006, Jatiwaringin Sub-district, Pondok Gede District, Bekasi City.\nThe victim had hung a tote bag containing her purse and sales earnings\nof Rp7.5 million on the fence near her stall. The perpetrator,\npretending to order nasi uduk, exploited the victim\u2019s momentary lapse in\nattention.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhile the victim was serving a customer, the perpetrator took the\nbag and concealed it inside his clothing. The victim, upon noticing his\nactions, attempted to block him and grabbed his hand,\u201d said the\nofficer.<\/p>\n
However, the perpetrator sped away on a motorcycle. The victim fell\nto the ground whilst the suspect made his escape. A similar incident\noccurred again on Tuesday, 17 February 2026 at approximately 07:30\nWestern Indonesian Time on Jalan Bulak Tinggi, Pondok Melati, Bekasi\nCity. The footage of this incident went viral and sparked outrage among\ninternet users.<\/p>\n
Investigations revealed that the perpetrator employed the same modus\noperandi \u2014 pretending to purchase nasi uduk whilst targeting vulnerable\nvictims such as middle-aged and elderly women.<\/p>\n
Special Team I of Subdit Resmob subsequently launched a series of\ninvestigative operations. Police conducted crime scene examinations,\nreviewed CCTV footage from multiple locations, and carried out\nanalytical assessments. The efforts yielded matching evidence from\nseveral CCTV recordings, enabling officers to identify the suspect.<\/p>\n
