Snakes to travel in coffee bottles<\/p>\n
JAYAPURA, Irian Jaya: Conservation authorities have foiled an
\nattempt by three Russians to smuggle three Boeleni python out of
\nIrian Jaya province.<\/p>\n
Setio Hindrianto, head of the local conservation office, told
\nAntara Tuesday that the three snakes were placed in instant
\ncoffee bottles and hidden in a room at the Mangsapurani Hotel
\nnear Sentani airport in Jayapura.<\/p>\n
According to Setio, the Russians -- identified only as DT, VD
\nand VLD -- were accompanied by a guide from Bogor, West Java.
\nThey claimed to have a permit issued by the Indonesian Institute
\nof Sciences to conduct a study on the snake. The Institute denied
\nissuing the permit.<\/p>\n
Conservation office personnel grew suspicious when only one of
\nthe two people registered to handle the snakes came to pick them
\nup.<\/p>\n
The Russians said that they purchased the three snakes from
\nWamena villagers for Rp 100,000 (about US$43) each.<\/p>\n
In Jakarta, each would sell for more than Rp 1 million,
\nfetching even higher prices abroad. (14)<\/p>",
