        "content": "<p>Snakes released to protect crops<\/p>\n<p>YOGYAKARTA: Some 100 snakes were released in Argomulyo village,<br>\nCangkringan subdistrict, Sleman regency, to help local farmers in<br>\ntheir battle with mice that have been destroying crops.<\/p>\n<p>The snake release was presided over by Sleman Regent Ibnu<br>\nSubiyanto on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Apart from the released snakes, the regent warned locals not<br>\nto hunt for predators living in their areas because they were<br>\nproven effective in controlling the mice population in<br>\nagricultural areas.<\/p>\n<p>\"Just consider these snakes as guardians of the<br>\nfields, so don't kill them,\" Ibnu said.<\/p>\n<p>Separately, Head of Sleman Agricultural and Forestry Agency<br>\nAchmad Yulianto added predators were considered the most<br>\neffective agents to fight the mice plague due to the fact that<br>\nCangkringan's paddy fields were on sloping plots.<\/p>\n<p>\"It's difficult to carry out a mass mice cull here.
