Smurfit eyes Indonesia<\/p>\n
DUBLIN (Reuter): Smurfit Ireland and UK, a unit of Jefferson
\nSmurfit Group Plc., said Vietnam and Indonesia were the next
\ntargets for expansion after the announcement of a US$20 million
\njoint venture in Singapore yesterday.<\/p>\n
The chief executive of Smurfit Ireland and UK, Paddy Wright,
\nsaid the Singapore joint venture was particularly exciting
\nbecause it opened the door to other ventures in the Far East.<\/p>\n
"This venture is important for us because it can lead to other
\nthings and other types of packaging," Wright told Reuters, adding
\nthat plans for start up plants in Vietnam and Indonesia were at
\nan advanced stage.<\/p>\n
The Irish and UK division announced a joint venture with
\nSingapore-based New Toyo Group to manufacture folding cartons.
\nThe initial investment will be $20 million followed by further
\ninvestment as the joint venture develops.<\/p>\n
The business will trade under the name of Smurfit Toyo and
\nwill operate initially in Singapore, Hong Kong and the Jiangyin
\nProvince near Shanghai.<\/p>",
