Smooth traffic on holidays<\/p>\n
JAKARTA: Many of the capital's major, normally teeming
\nthoroughfares were empty on Sunday and Monday in the absence of
\nresidents who fled the city to celebrate the religious holidays
\nin their hometowns.<\/p>\n
The usually jammed Jl. Sudirman and Jl. M.H. Thamrin, for
\ninstance, were almost completely deserted.<\/p>\n
But there were exceptions. The roads which lead to recreation
\nareas such as Ancol in North Jakarta, the Ragunan zoo, East
\nJakarta and the Taman Mini Indonesia Indah, East Jakarta, on the
\nother hand, were jam-packed with visitors' vehicles.<\/p>\n
Roads near public cemeteries, such as Jl. Tanah Kusir in South
\nJakarta, meantime, also appeared busy with people stopping to
\npray at the graves of their relatives and loved ones.<\/p>\n
Jakartans also poured into shopping malls, many of which
\nremained open on the holiday, although several shops in some of
\nthe buildings were shuttered.<\/p>\n
While many Jakartans chose to stay at home and receive guests,
\nothers went to public recreational areas to be with family and
