The succession issue is drawing greater attention especially
\nwhen the general election is just around the corner. The fact is
\nthat the present president is getting older, even though many
\nbelieve he is still strong enough to maintain his post.<\/p>\n
It should be noted that the New Order has had successes and
\nfailures, and we have to learn from these failures. The foreign
\npress even labeled Indonesia as the most corrupt country in Asia.
\nBut strangely enough, foreign capital keeps flowing into
\nIndonesia.<\/p>\n
One of the most crucial areas is education. The cost of
\neducation has been burdensome to parents for the past 25 years.
\nThis only makes future leaders resort to acts of malfeasance,
\nincluding collusion and corruption, in return for any
\nprofessional courtesy.<\/p>\n
Sooner or later we will experience a succession in leadership.
\nThis particular issue should be handled with extra care.
\nSingapore, for example, has been very successful in this matter.
\nWe know that former Prime Minister Lee Kuan Yew, the founding
\nfather of the country, is still holding a post as Senior
\nMinister, and his son, who is a military general, is a minister
\nin the cabinet.<\/p>\n
Indonesia, as a developing country, where democracy is still
\nin its infancy, must prepare for a smooth and natural transition
\nof national leadership. But, it is important that the present
\nleadership remains unchanged, until the time arrives for a
\ntrouble-free transfer of power.<\/p>\n
