Smoking on Garuda<\/p>\n
Having recently taken a return flight to Jeddah on Garuda (GA
\n980\/1) I was most surprised to discover that smoking was
\npermitted on board the aircraft, needless to say, to the
\nconsiderable discomfort of myself and the vast majority of other
\npassengers, most of whom were fasting at the time.<\/p>\n
I enquired of the stewardess, who confirmed that smoking was
\nindeed allowed on the flight, albeit in designated seating areas
\n(although, of course, this failed to prevent foul-smelling clove
\nclouds from permeating the entire length of the cabin).<\/p>\n
Furthermore, there was no announcement on the public address
\nsystem requesting that passengers extinguish their cigarettes
\nprior to landing.<\/p>\n
Two points here: First, if Garuda wishes to be regarded as a
\nmodern international airline, then surely it should follow
\nindustry conventions on smoking? Second, may I suggest that it
\nmakes public its policy in this regard so that consumers can make
\nthe appropriate choice prior to purchasing tickets.<\/p>\n
