        "content": "<p>Smoke-free school campaign kicks off<\/p>\n<p>The Jakarta Post, Jakarta<\/p>\n<p>Smoking in schools may become a thing of the past now as the<br>\nIndonesian AIDS Foundation (YAI) has launched a campaign to make<br>\nhigh schools in Jakarta non-smoking zones.<\/p>\n<p>The foundation, whose primary concern is preventing the spread<br>\nof HIV\/AIDS, will select three schools out of 41 across the city<br>\nwhich have registered for the non-smoking school award program.<br>\nThe foundation cites studies that show that children who smoke<br>\nearly in life are more likely to take drugs.<\/p>\n<p>\"The selected schools will receive a total of Rp 100 million<br>\nin the award program,\" said YAI executive Martina Widjaja in a<br>\npress conference on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Martina said the committee was prepared to monitor 150<br>\nschools, but only 41 schools declared their readiness to sign up<br>\nfor the program, the registration for which opened early in May<br>\nand closed last Monday.<\/p>\n<p>Beginning June 1 until November, over 100 volunteers will make<br>\nimpromptu visits to the registered schools.<\/p>\n<p>\"In the assessment, we will also see if the schools still<br>\nallow guests and teachers to smoke in the compound,\" Martina<br>\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>The award program is being conducted in cooperation with the<br>\nMinistry of National Education and the National Commission on<br>\nEradicating Smoking.<\/p>\n<p>It was aimed at discouraging high school students from<br>\nstarting to smoke during their school years.<\/p>\n<p>Surveys show that young drug users started to smoke while at<br>\nschool before trying drugs.<\/p>\n<p>The survey findings, which have become the basis of the<br>\nstrategy of the government and non-governmental organizations in<br>\nprograms to prevent the spread of HIV\/AIDS, also found that most<br>\npeople living with HIV\/AIDS in Indonesia were young injecting<br>\ndrug users.<\/p>\n<p>Among the schools taking part in the project, are Al Azhar<br>\nhigh school in Bumi Serpong Damai, Tangerang, Gonzaga high school<br>\nand SMA 1 state high school in Jakarta, and Regina Pacis high<br>\nschool in Bogor.<\/p>",
