Small-scale industries to be regulated<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The city administration will register all
\nsmall-scale and home industries in Jakarta to monitor their
\ndevelopment.<\/p>\n
The City Statistics Office chief, Poniman Suhartono, said
\nyesterday his office will deploy 102 officials, who were trained
\nfor the purpose from Nov. 16 to Nov. 24 at the Ragunan Youth
\nCenter, South Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Poniman said the census will begin next month<\/p>\n
He asked small-scale business people to help the
\nregistration officials by giving them accurate and verifiable
\ndata.<\/p>\n
He said the census has nothing to do with taxes, levies, or
\nthe ownership of land and buildings.<\/p>\n
Poniman also told to The Jakarta Post yesterday that the
\noffice is now preparing to participate in the 1995 National
\nSocial and Economic Survey.<\/p>\n
The 1995 Census will be conducted throughout the country's
\n27 provinces. The census will record household and education
\nactivities, health and fertility conditions, participation in the
\nfamily planning program and spending.<\/p>\n
Poniman did not say when the 1995 census will start.<\/p>\n
Poniman said that the result of the 1995 census will be used
\nto compile various statistical records on people's welfare,
\neducation, health and housing.<\/p>\n

Poniman said 250 officials will conduct the 1995 census in
\nJakarta.<\/p>\n
Based on the 1993 census, 98 percent of the people in
\nJakarta aged between seven to 12 years were elementary school
\nstudents and 89 percent of the people aged from 13 to 15 years
\nwere junior high school students.<\/p>\n
Poniman also said that 1993's census had revealed that in
\nthe age group ranging from 19 to 24 years old, 69 percent were
\nsenior high school students, while the remainder were university
\nstudents.<\/p>\n
Among people over 10 years old, 64.7 percent were workers,
\n18.9 percent self-employed businessmen, 9.8 percent businessmen
\nlinked to seasonal sectors, 4.6 percent people who work in family
\nbusinesses, and 2 percent businessmen with employees.<\/p>\n
Poniman also said the 1993 census stated that 42.78 percent
\nof total spending by Jakartans went for food, while the remaining
\n57.22 percent was used for various purposes, such as housing,
\nhousehold goods and services.<\/p>\n
He said that in 1993, 10.31 percent of the total population
\nin Jakarta were job seekers. (mas)<\/p>",
