        "content": "<p>Small business still out: BKPM<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): State Minister for Investment Sanyoto<br>\nSastrowardoyo said yesterday that business activities reserved<br>\nfor small-scale businesses would remain closed to foreign<br>\ninvestment.<\/p>\n<p>\"Like the retail sector, business activities especially<br>\nreserved for small companies remain closed to foreign<br>\ninvestment,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Minister for Cooperatives and Small Enterprises Subiakto<br>\nTjakrawerdaya expressed concern last week over a statement made<br>\nby Sanyoto concerning his office's efforts to encourage foreign<br>\ninvestors, particularly from Japan, to establish light industries<br>\nin Indonesia. Subiakto said an influx of foreign investors into<br>\nlight industries could hurt small local companies, which were<br>\nfacing problems, he said, not only in financing but also in<br>\nmarketing and management.<\/p>\n<p>Sanyoto, also chairman of the Investment Coordinating Board,<br>\nsaid yesterday that the existing investment regulations clearly<br>\nspecified which business sectors foreign investors may enter.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have no plans to change the present investment<br>\nregulations,\" he said following a ministerial coordinating<br>\nmeeting on trade, finance, investment and industry.<\/p>\n<p>The government's June 1994 foreign investment deregulation.<br>\npackage abolished minimum investment requirements and removed<br>\ndivestment requirements in all but the infrastructure sector.<\/p>\n<p>Sanyoto said that foreign investors were barred only from<br>\nentering business sectors on the negative list for foreign<br>\ninvestment and those reserved for small domestic companies.<\/p>\n<p>The special business activities reserved for small domestic<br>\ncompanies are mainly handicrafts, such as the production of<br>\nsouvenirs and hand-made batik garments.(hen)<\/p>",
