Slum building owners get special treatment<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City administration will give a 50 percent
\ndiscount for sub-standard buildings in slum areas.<\/p>\n
Head of the city development and supervision office Suharto
\nsaid that the discount will help the owners obtain official
\nbuilding recognition letters from the city administration.<\/p>\n
Suharto said that the recognition letters are not the same as
\nbuilding permits. Requirements for building permits are difficult
\nto meet for owners of sub-standard buildings, which were built
\nmainly under the MH Thamrin kampong improvement project, he said.<\/p>\n
\"To get building permits, for example, the owners are required to
\nsubmit land certificates, designs of the houses and land location
\ndocuments,\" Suharto told the Antara news agency.<\/p>\n
According to Suharto 2,248 out of 17,437 buildings being
\nconstructed in the city are not equipped with building permits.
\n\"These illegal buildings, mostly houses, are included in the sub-
\nstandard category,\" he said.<\/p>\n
Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs Tb. M. Rais confirmed that
\nthe plan to give discounts will be implemented soon.<\/p>\n
Rais said that the plan is also intended to help the city
\nregister the number of the sub-standard buildings.<\/p>\n
Suharto stressed that through the discounts Jakartans are
\nexpected to be more aware about the importance of obtaining a
\npermit before starting the construction of a building.<\/p>\n
He said that his office has a total of 400 field officers in
\ncharge of supervising building constructions in the city. Their
\njobs include compiling reports on the number of construction
\nprojects as well as their violations. (yns)<\/p>",
