Sleman to build Merapi museum<\/p>\n

As part of efforts to educate the public on Mount Merapi, the
\nSleman regency government plans to start the construction of a
\nMount Merapi museum in December.<\/p>\n
The government has earmarked Rp 80 billion (US$8 million) for
\nthe museum construction.<\/p>\n
\"The museum is important to provide the public with
\ninformation on Mount Merapi,\" said Sleman Regent Ibnu Subiyakto.<\/p>\n
The museum will be built on two hectares of land in Kaliurang
\ntourist resort in Banteng subdistrict, Sleman.<\/p>\n
Besides the museum, the government will also build an Imax
\ntheater and the replica of Mount Merapi. The museum will depict
\nthe impact of Merapi eruptions since 1006.<\/p>\n
The funding for the museum construction came from various
\nparties with Yogyakarta provincial government contributing Rp 3
\nbillion, the central government Rp 24 billion, while the rest
\nwill be covered by the Sleman regency government.<\/p>\n
Regent Ibnu said the regental government was also planning to
\nbuild biology and wax museums near the Mount Merapi Museum.<\/p>\n
Merapi has had 68 major eruptions since 1548 with the latest
\nbeing in 1987.<\/p>\n
As the volcano is considered volatile and it is close to
\nYogyakarta city, it is now the target of increased research
\nefforts.<\/p>",
