Slaughtering fees to be raised<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): City-owned slaughterhouse PD Dharma Jaya will
\nraise fees for butchering pigs and cattle by 30 percent and 65
\npercent respectively to enable the company to cover losses caused
\nby the crisis.<\/p>\n
Company president Susanto said in a meeting with members of
\nCity Council Commission C for financial affairs on Monday that
\nthe hike was inevitable.<\/p>\n
Susanto said fees for pig slaughtering would be raised to Rp
\n22,500 from Rp 17,000 each and for cattle to Rp 25,000 from Rp
\n15,000 each.<\/p>\n
Councilors welcomed the ideas, saying that it would help shore
\nup the company's financial status by balancing the operational
\nfees with the meat sales.<\/p>\n
Data at the city administration revealed earlier that the
\ncompany suffered Rp 4.6 billion in financial losses during the
\n1997\/1998 fiscal year.<\/p>\n
Poor financial performance prevented it from contributing a
\nprojected Rp 438 million to the city budget.<\/p>\n
Susanto said the company's losses were caused mainly by the
\nrupiah depreciation against the U.S. dollar, which forced Dharma
\nJaya to pay higher fees for the purchase of cattle imports and
\nfeed for the fattening process.<\/p>\n
Commission chairman Amarullah Asbah urged the company to
\nimprove its financial and management evaluation for the sake of
\nefficiency.<\/p>\n
The company butchers pigs, cattle, buffaloes, sheep and lambs
\naccording to government standards and distributes their meat to
\ntraditional markets and supermarkets throughout the city.<\/p>\n
Susanto said city inhabitants consumed meat from about 572
\npigs and 900 cattle per day.<\/p>\n
