Public-Private Cooperation for eVTOL Commercialisation Grows in\nIndonesia<\/p>\n
Market demand in Indonesia has been confirmed, and efforts to obtain\ncertification are accelerating.<\/p>\n
SkyDrive Inc., a leading Japanese developer of compact eVTOL\naircraft, has proudly announced the success of a promotional event held\nwith leading Indonesian helicopter operator Whitesky Aviation. The\ntwo-day event on 23-24 June at Whitesky\u2019s Cengkareng Heliport,\nstrategically located next to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in\nJakarta, confirmed demand for eVTOL aircraft from prospective customers\nin the mining and agricultural sectors, as well as from government\norganisations.<\/p>\n
SkyDrive sees growth opportunities in Indonesia due to various\nfactors affecting living standards and productivity in both urban and\nrural areas. Each year, economic losses from traffic congestion in the\nJakarta metropolitan area are estimated to reach approximately 65\ntrillion rupiah. The mining industry, a major industry in various\nIndonesian regions contributing around 10 per cent of regional GDP, and\nthe country\u2019s vast plantation areas, covering more than 15 million\nhectares, experience logistical delays and disaster response challenges\ndue to underdeveloped infrastructure.<\/p>\n
During the promotional event, SkyDrive exhibited a full-scale replica\nof the SKYDRIVE (SkyDrive Model SD-05) for the first time outside Japan.\nSkyDrive also presented several proposals to participants regarding the\npractical application of eVTOLs to address social issues that Indonesia\nis currently working to resolve.<\/p>\n
History of SkyDrive and Whitesky Cooperation<\/p>\n
SkyDrive and Whitesky formed a strategic partnership for the launch\nof eVTOL operations in Indonesia in August 2025. Since then, the two\nparties have worked together to discuss the future of the business and\ndevelop specific business plans.<\/p>\n
The cooperation between the two companies began with a focus on\naddressing the severe traffic congestion currently affecting the quality\nof life in Jakarta. One problem caused by congestion is the slow ground\ntravel between Soekarno-Hatta International Airport and the city centre.\nBecause Whitesky manages the Cengkareng Heliport, strategically located\nnext to the airport, an air taxi service between the airport and the\ncity centre became a suitable starting point for discussing the\nfeasibility of future urban eVTOL routes.<\/p>\n
Discussions between SkyDrive and Whitesky on reducing traffic\ncongestion in urban areas were followed by further studies on the\npotential role of eVTOLs in supporting the mining and agricultural\nindustries, which play an important role in driving Indonesia\u2019s\nsustainable economic development.<\/p>\n
Although natural resource mining is a major industry on several\nIndonesian islands such as Kalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra, mine sites\nare often located in areas with limited road infrastructure. This\ncondition leads to inefficiencies and logistical delays when providing\nmedical care to victims of workplace accidents in these areas, which can\noccur several times a week.<\/p>\n
In addition to the mining sector, the two companies are also\nexploring potential cooperation in the agricultural sector due to the\nvast agricultural land in Indonesia. Although drones are currently used\nto detect forest fires and conduct surveillance patrols over large\nareas, long distances can limit the effectiveness of drone use.<\/p>\n
As discussions between SkyDrive and Whitesky evolved from urban air\ntaxi services to eVTOL services for regional industries, it became\nincreasingly clear that eVTOLs have the potential to save operational\ncosts and reduce environmental impact in both scenarios. With these\nconsiderations, this event was organised to build momentum for realising\nvarious specific eVTOL applications across all these sectors.<\/p>\n
Proposed eVTOL Applications<\/p>\n
Following initial discussions focused on the use of eVTOL aircraft\nfor urban air taxi services, SkyDrive and Whitesky are now continuing\nconcrete studies on the application of eVTOLs in various key regional\nindustries as described below.<\/p>\n
Urban air taxi services in the Jakarta metropolitan area and its\nsurroundings: Fast transportation services that can avoid urban\ncongestion for passengers travelling from Soekarno-Hatta International\nAirport to the centre of Jakarta, including surrounding smart city\nareas.<\/p><\/li>\n
Tourism and business travel in Bali and the new capital city,\nNusantara: Services connecting tourist destinations and business\ncentres, offering efficient and environmentally friendly mobility\nsolutions.<\/p><\/li>\n
Use of eVTOLs in the mining industry on the islands of\nKalimantan, Sulawesi, and Sumatra: Services at mining sites that require\nlong journeys by car or bus due to poor road access. This includes\nshuttle services for engineers and other employees to mining sites and\nemergency medical services equivalent to medical helicopter services for\nhandling workplace accidents and natural disasters.<\/p><\/li>\n
Use of eVTOLs in oil palm plantations, paper industry\nplantations, and large-scale sugarcane plantations: Site monitoring and\npatrol services, as required by owners and managers of large-scale\nagricultural plantations. Maximum flight distance limitations restrict\nthe effectiveness of drone surveillance on very large plantations.\neVTOLs can also quickly detect and address forest fires that frequently\nstrike plantations, especially during the dry season.<\/p><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
Currently, some of these services still use conventional helicopters.\nReplacing helicopters with eVTOL aircraft will result in lower\noperational costs, fewer emissions, and quieter operations.<\/p>\n
