Sjahrir declares new party<\/p>\n

Noted economist Sjahrir declared on Monday the establishment
\nof the New Indonesia Alliance Party (PIB), whose immediate aim is
\nto contest the 2004 general election.<\/p>\n
In his speech before 3,000 people attending the ceremony held
\nat Hotel Indonesia, Sjahrir said the new party sought to revive
\nthe economic sector for a new Indonesia through reasonable
\npolitics, adding that it also aims to "create a healthy, clean
\nand dynamic political environment".<\/p>\n
The economist was elected the new party's chairman with Taufik
\nDarusman as the secretary-general.<\/p>\n
Among those attending the event was fellow economist Hadi
\nSoesastro, who is the executive director of the Centre for
\nStrategic and International Studies (CSIS).<\/p>\n
Sjahrir, a former student activist in the 1970s, expressed
\nhope that the new party would be able to create new jobs, raise
\ntax revenue, improve economic growth and eradicate poverty.<\/p>\n
PIB is the latest party to be set up by public figures during
\nthe past few months.<\/p>\n
The other three parties founded were the Pioneer Party by
\nPresident Megawati Soekarnoputri's sister Rachmawati
\nSoekarnoputri, the Bung Karno Nationalist Party by composer-
\nturned-politician Eros Djarot and the Unity Democracy and
\nNationhood Party by political observer Ryaas Rasyid and Andi M.
