Sjahril files lawsuit<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Suspended Bank Indonesia governor Sjahril
\nSabirin has filed a pretrial lawsuit against the Attorney
\nGeneral's Office over his arrest status, a South Jakarta District
\nCourt official said on Monday.<\/p>\n
M. Yusuf, a clerk at the court, said the court's officials
\nwere studying the plea.<\/p>\n
Sjahril's lawyers said the arrest of their client, who is
\ndetained at the Attorney General's Office, was aimed at
\nintimidating Sjahril rather than facilitating a smooth
\ninvestigation.<\/p>\n
\"It's proven by several facts in Sjahril's diary he made
\nduring his detention,\" his lawyers, Abdul Hakim Garuda Nusantara,
\nSulistio and Reza Fanjasmoro said in a statement.<\/p>\n
The lawyers also claimed that the Attorney General's Office
\nwas not entitled to extend the detention period of their client.
\nThey added that the office's decision to name Sjahril a suspect
\nin the Bank Bali scandal \"did not have any legal base\".<\/p>\n
\"It's the responsibility of a district court, not the
\nprosecutors, to decide on an extension.<\/p>\n
\"We ask the court to annul Sjahril's arrest status and the
\nextension of the arrest period,\" they said.<\/p>\n
Sjahril was named a suspect in the bank scandal on June 6 and
\nwas taken into custody two weeks later to avoid the possibility
\nof fleeing, destroying evidence or committing similar crimes.<\/p>\n
He has been accused of violating the central bank's prudential
\npolicy in reimbursing interbank loans guaranteed by the
\ngovernment, which has caused losses to the state. (bby)<\/p>",
