Surabaya State University (Unesa) has imposed academic suspension\nsanctions of up to three semesters on six Vocational Faculty students\nwho were proven to have committed verbal sexual violence in the form of\nobjectification in a WhatsApp (WA) conversation group.<\/p>\n
The decision to impose the sanctions was officially taken by the\nrectorate after receiving a recommendation from the Task Force for the\nPrevention and Handling of Violence (Satgas PPK) under the Directorate\nof Prevention and Management of Strategic Issues (DPPIS) at Unesa.<\/p>\n
Based on the results of the examination and assessment of each\nreported individual\u2019s level of involvement in the conversation group,\nthe sanctions imposed varied. One student was given a suspension\nsanction of 3 semesters, two students were given suspension sanctions of\n2 semesters, and three students were given suspension sanctions of 1\nsemester.<\/p>\n
\u201cSix reported students have officially been given academic sanctions\ntending towards severe, in the form of suspension with varying durations\naccording to each individual\u2019s level of involvement in the group\nconversation. There is one student sanctioned for three semesters, two\nstudents sanctioned for two semesters, and three students sanctioned for\none semester,\u201d said Unesa Vice Rector Martadi in his statement on\nThursday (13\/8).<\/p>\n
Martadi said that the determination of the sanctions was made by\nupholding the principles of justice, proportionality, and a thorough\nevaluation from various aspects.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn determining these sanctions, Unesa ensures that the decision is\nbased on the principles of justice and proportionality. The assessment\nprocess was carried out comprehensively through four main aspects,\nnamely the protection and interests of the victim, juridical aspects,\nsociological aspects, and psychological aspects,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
In addition to the academic suspension sanctions, Martadi said, Unesa\nalso cancelled and revoked the Student Creativity Programme (PKM)\nfunding belonging to one of the reported individuals as a consequence of\nthe ethical violation.<\/p>\n
To provide moral guidance, Martadi said, the suspects are required to\nparticipate in a discipline and rehabilitation programme. This programme\nincludes mandatory counselling, spiritual development, and assignments\nfrom the Satgas PPK.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe guidance programme aims to help the reported individuals\nunderstand the impact of their actions, improve their behaviour, and\nrebuild understanding regarding communication ethics, respect for fellow\nmembers of the academic community, and the values of campus life with\nintegrity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, regarding the handling of victims, Martadi said Unesa is\nproviding ongoing assistance. For victims who are students, the\nassistance covers academic aspects to ensure the continuity of their\nstudies.<\/p>\n
As a preventive measure going forward, Unesa continues to intensify\nmitigation by strengthening literacy on violence prevention, education\non communication ethics in digital spaces, and regular monitoring.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis entire series of handling affirms Unesa\u2019s commitment that the\nresolution of violence cases does not stop at the imposition of\nsanctions, but rather is part of efforts to build an academic culture\nthat is safe, has integrity, and is free from violence, both in offline\nand digital spaces,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Previously, a case of alleged sexual harassment using the mode of\nconversation in a WhatsApp group chat occurred again in the education\nsector. This was revealed at Surabaya State University (Unesa), East\nJava. At least 26 students and lecturers became victims.<\/p>\n
There are six reported individuals in this case, namely RY, HA, AD,\nRE, JO and DO. They initially created a group chat on the WhatsApp\nplatform to discuss competition activities. However, the channel was\nlater used for unethical conversations that led to alleged sexual\nharassment.<\/p>\n
