West Java is not only famous for its cool air and stunning natural
scenery. Behind the beauty of its hills and tea plantations, the land of
Pasundan also holds cultural treasures in the form of folk tales and
legends passed down through generations.

Interestingly, these mythological stories and romances of the past
are more than just bedtime stories; they are closely linked to the
natural landscape.

Some of the places that serve as the setting for these legends have
now transformed into popular tourist attractions that are always crowded
with visitors. As reported by several sources, these legends give a
unique magical attraction to tourists who come.

Speaking of legends in West Java, this destination immediately comes
to mind. Mount Tangkuban Parahu, located on the border of Bandung
Regency and Subang, is closely associated with the story of
Sangkuriang.

The legend tells of a young man named Sangkuriang who fell in love
with his own mother, Dayang Sumbi. To thwart the marriage, Dayang Sumbi
asked for the condition that a lake and a boat be made in one night.
Because he failed due to Dayang Sumbi’s cleverness, Sangkuriang kicked
the boat, causing it to turn over and transform into a mountain shaped
like an overturned boat.

Situ Bagendit (Legend of Nyai Bagendit)

Moving on to Garut Regency, there is a natural lake tourist
attraction called Situ Bagendit. This beautiful water tourism spot is
said to have been formed from the story of a wealthy widow named Nyai
Bagendit who was very stingy and arrogant.

One day, an old beggar came asking for help but was instead cruelly
expelled by Nyai Bagendit. The old man then stuck a twig into the
ground, and when the twig was pulled out, water gushed out, flooding
Nyai Bagendit and all her wealth, creating the lake we know today.

The highest mountain in West Java, which stretches across Kuningan
and Majalengka, is also shrouded in mystery and legend. One of the most
famous folk tales among the people around Mount Ciremai is the legend of
Nini Pelet.
",
