Six still in hospital in Aug. 17 tragedy<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): For some people, this year's celebration of
\nIndependence Day turned into a tragedy they would never forget.<\/p>\n
Three people were killed and 14 others injured when the porch
\nof a poorly constructed two-story house collapsed in Kebayoran
\nLama on Friday during the celebration of Independence Day.<\/p>\n
On Sunday, six people were still receiving treatment for their
\ninjuries.<\/p>\n
Among them is Ayu Wulandari, a five-and-a-half-year old girl
\nwho could not even open her eyes as they were severely swollen
\nand bruised.<\/p>\n
She lies helplessly at Pertamina Hospital in South Jakarta.
\nHer head is bandaged as it was severely injured from being hit by
\nfragments of the house.<\/p>\n
Ayu's mother, Sanikem, is unable to take care of her as she
\nherself is lying in bed at home.<\/p>\n
Sanikem was accompanying Ayu when the incident happened. Ayu
\nwas taking part in a game called \"shirt buttoning\". In the
\ntraditional game, participants are given a shirt and have to do
\nup the buttons as quickly as they can.<\/p>\n
According to Sanikem's sister Sri Rahayu, Sanikem actually
\nshould be hospitalized. She had five stitches on her head and one
\nof her ribs and her right leg were broken, Sri said.<\/p>\n
\"The doctor advised her to undergo surgery, but she refused,
\nconsidering that Ayu's treatment alone will be too costly to
\nmanage,\" Sri told The Jakarta Post.<\/p>\n
Before her family took Sanikem home, they brought her to a
\ntraditional medical practitioner.<\/p>\n
\"But until now, she is unable to move... she can't even sit,\"
\nSri added.<\/p>\n
At the emergency unit of the hospital, Makmur Budihardja was
\ncaring for her daughter in-law, Hesti, 24.<\/p>\n
\"She's in great pain right now, she can't even talk,\" Makmur
\nsaid, adding that his daughter in-law had undergone two
\noperations and will have another one tomorrow.<\/p>\n
Iron rods punctured Hesti's sides, wounding her kidney and
\nintestines. Cuts and bruises covered her face.<\/p>\n
Makmur hoped his son Wandi, who is currently working on an oil
\nrig in Malaysia, would be here soon.<\/p>\n
\"When he is here, everything will be fine,\" Makmur a resident
\nof Bandung, West Java, said.<\/p>\n
Another victim is Sukanti, 20, one of the Independence Day
\ngame organizers, who is being treated at Fatmawati Hospital,
\nSouth Jakarta.<\/p>\n
Her jaw is broken, as well as her right shoulder and leg.<\/p>\n
\"She is still unable to speak, but at least her condition is
\nnot deteriorating. On the first day, blood kept flowing from her
\nmouth and nose,\" her mother told the Post.<\/p>\n
Being the first in her family to achieve university education,
\nSukanti's parents have high hopes for her.<\/p>\n
Her father vowed to do everything within his capacity to
\nensure his daughter's recovery.<\/p>\n
According to her mother, Sukanti would undergo surgery
\ntomorrow and several other operations when her condition had
\nimproved.<\/p>\n
Sukanti was about to begin her fourth semester at Veteran
\nUniversity in Pondok Labu, East Jakarta, where she studies
\nbanking.<\/p>\n
\"I hope she will be able to continue her education as she is
\nour hope to improve the family's social status,\" said Sukatman,
\nwho sells chicken noodles at the Mayestic market.<\/p>\n
The family said they would not file any charges nor bear any
\ngrudge against Suharno, the owner of the house which collapsed.<\/p>\n
\"He is of the same economic class as us, we can't expect
\nanything from him anyway,\" said Sunarti.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile police have questioned three other organizers of the
\ntragic Independence Day games.<\/p>\n
