Six people killed as floods strike CJava district<\/p>\n
CILACAP, Central Java (JP): Six people were drowned in the
\ndistricts of Cilacap, Kebumen and Salatiga by floods that
\ncontinue to affect many areas around the province.<\/p>\n
The waters from the Serayu and Citanduy rivers are overflowing
\nin 14 subdistricts in Cilacap, four in Kebumen and have already
\ninundated thousands of houses.<\/p>\n
Search and rescue workers said that they have so far found
\nfour bodies. Three were identified as Cilacap residents and one
\nwas from Kebumen.<\/p>\n
In Salatiga, the victims were several youths that were trying
\nto seek shelter when floods unexpectedly swept them away into a
\nrocky river on Monday, Antara reported.<\/p>\n
The body of Yulianto, 17, was found on Monday evening four
\nkilometers down the river with bruises all over his body. The
\nbody of Dwi Lestari has yet to be found, police said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Cilacap regent Muhammad Soepardi told The Jakarta Post
\nyesterday that scores of villages in 11 subdistricts throughout
\nthe region were inundated.<\/p>\n
Chief of the Cilacap food crop office Soetaryo said the
\nflooding threatened several thousand hectares of paddy fields.
\n\"The crops will die if the flooding does not subside in a week,\"
\nhe told the Post.<\/p>\n
Heavy rains in Central Java also triggered landslides in
\nBanjarnegara and Wonosobo. The worst occurred in Wonosobo where a
\n50 meter road section was under 1.5 meters of water.<\/p>\n
In the Kaliwiro subdistrict of Wonosobo, a landslide destroyed
\n32 houses, a kindergarten building and an elementary school
\nbuilding.<\/p>\n
Traffic between Tegal and Purwokerto has been blocked because
\nwaters from the Pemali river have inundated the highway in
\nMargasari that connects the two towns.<\/p>\n
The floods also submerged railway tracks in Tegal which
\nconnect West Java and Central Java, but the water level has not
\nrisen high enough to disrupt railway traffic.<\/p>\n
Central Java governor Soewardi yesterday toured some of the
\naffected districts, including Pemalang, Tegal, Brebes, Banyumas
\nand Cilacap.<\/p>\n
The provincial government has provided 100 tons of rice for
\nflood victims.<\/p>\n
In the capital city of Semarang, a member of the provincial
\nlegislative council, Karseno, criticized district governments for
\nresponding late with flood information on their areas.<\/p>\n
To make things worse, the information is rarely accompanied by
\naccurate data, he said.<\/p>\n
\"This results in poor coordination between the provincial and
\nregency governments when handling the situation,\" said Karseno,
\nwho is the head of a legislative commission in charge of social
\naffairs.<\/p>\n
\"If information is always late, how can the government provide
\nthe necessary aid in time? This may also encourage corruption
