Six held in student demo<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Six people were arrested and five others
\ninjured during a demonstration yesterday by 200 people on the
\nUniversity of Indonesia's Jl. Salemba campus in Central Jakarta
\nto commemorate the 40th day after the Ujungpandang riot in which
\nthree students died.<\/p>\n
Central Jakarta Police Chief Lt. Col. Abubakar Nataprawira
\nconfirmed the arrest of the students, saying that the police are
\nstill investigating whether they are really students.<\/p>\n
The six were arrested for allegedly being the instigators of
\nthe demonstration, a police source said.<\/p>\n
The four-hour demo, which started at 11 a.m, began with some
\nof the demonstrators holding a mass prayer in the Arif Rahman
\nHakim mosque in the university complex, while the Christian
\nparticipants held similar prayers in a yard next to the mosque.<\/p>\n
The students then moved to the Jakarta Legal Aid Institute
\n(LBH) on Jl. Diponegoro.<\/p>\n
A riot erupted as the officers beat the students while trying
\nto grab their banners. The police and students threw stones at
\neach other. Five demonstrators and a Paron tabloid photographer,
\nWahyu Purwadi, were injured in the clash, which took place in
\nfront of the LBH front yard building.<\/p>\n
Official statements said three students were killed in the
\nprotest against the increase in transportation fares in
\nUjungpandang, South Sulawesi in April. (jun)<\/p>",
