Six arrested in West Timor riot<\/p>\n
KUPANG, East Nusa Tenggara (JP): Six people have been arrested
\non charges of inciting a riot Monday in Kafemananu, West Timor,
\n200 kilometers east of here, police said yesterday.<\/p>\n
East Nusa Tenggara police inspector Colonel Taufik S. said 19
\npeople, including three police officers, were injured and a
\nmarket burned down in the riot Monday night.<\/p>\n
Two hundred migrants from Java and South Sulawesi who were
\nworking at a construction site belonging to PT Adhi Karya had
\nsince sought refuge at the local police and military stations,
\nTaufik said.<\/p>\n
The riot began when a group of youths attacked 16 workers from
\nAtambua who had just arrived at the site in Kafemananu. The 16
\nwere still in hospital yesterday.<\/p>\n
Shortly after the attack, about 200 people raided the market
\nand set fire to it, Antara news agency reported.<\/p>\n
The migrant workers fled to the police and military station
\nTuesday morning.<\/p>\n
Sources at Kefamenanu hospital said the conditions of the 16
\nworkers were stable. One of the injured police officers was
\nidentified as First Lieutenant Aloysius.<\/p>\n
Officials in Kupang said the authorities were still wondering
\nwhat had caused the incident.<\/p>\n
Many shops remained closed in Kafemananu yesterday. Police and
\nsoldiers were seen on the streets to maintain order. (yac\/pan)<\/p>",
