Sisindosat to establish cable television network<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): A new cable television network will enter
\nhousing complexes in the near future as a telecommunications
\ncompany completes a feasibility study in Jakarta and its
\nsurrounding areas.<\/p>\n
PT Sisindosat, a subsidiary of the state-owned international
\ntelecommunications company PT Indosat, plans to establish a cable
\ntelevision network next year, the company's president, Henry
\nKawilarang, announced here yesterday.<\/p>\n
\"We are conducting a feasibility study, whose completion is
\nscheduled before the end of this year, with assistance from a
\nCanadian company,\" he told reporters while attending a ceremony
\nfor the introduction of Sisindosat's new subsidiary, PT Mutiara
\nCaraka Lintas, at the Shangri-La hotel.<\/p>\n
Sisindosat's finance and administration manager, Arief A.
\nSoedjono, said the company will have to invest from US$5 million
\nto $10 million for the business.<\/p>\n
Kawilarang said that Sisindosat, which possesses essential
\ntelecommunications infrastructure, is ready for competition in
\nthe cable television business.<\/p>\n
\"We will offer at least six programs. We may ask for a license
\nfrom PT Matahari Lintas Cakrawala (Malicak) for the programs,\" he
\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Malicak, a subsidiary of the diversified business group
\nBimantara, has the rights to marketing several American cable
\nnetworks in Indonesia, including CNN International, TNT, the
\nCartoon Network, the Discovery Channel and HBO. All of these
\ncable services, now still accessible to owners of dish antennas,
\nwill be scrambled beginning in September. After that viewers in
\nIndonesia must buy decoders provided by Malicak to get the
