        "content": "<p>Sipadan and Ligitan issue<\/p>\n<p>From Merdeka<\/p>\n<p>I would like to comment on the letter by Mr. Suharsono H. in<br>\nMerdeka, Feb. 6, 1995, under the heading Dispute on Sipadan and<br>\nLigitan Islands.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Suharsono forwarded an interesting proposal and fair<br>\nreasons. He proposed that a joint Indonesia-Malaysia authority be<br>\nset up, each possessing 50 percent of share, to manage the two<br>\nislands. And after 50 years of operation, the two islands should<br>\nbe transferred to Indonesia.<\/p>\n<p>The letter further said that if Malaysia took the case to the<br>\nInternational Court in The Hague, Indonesia would be highly<br>\nlikely to win the case, since Indonesia has a very solid argument<br>\non its claim.<\/p>\n<p>But, in my opinion, Malaysia will reject the proposal of joint<br>\nauthority over the islands as I am confident that Malaysia, too,<br>\nhas the necessary documents which are strong enough to prove its<br>\nlegal ownership of the two islands.<\/p>\n<p>Therefore, I am of the opinion that the best way to solve the<br>\nproblem is to bring the case to the International Court. Whatever<br>\nthe result is would be fair and acceptable to both countries,<br>\ntaking into account that the International Court is a neutral<br>\nbody.<\/p>\n<p>Also, a solution through the International Court would save<br>\nthe integrity of ASEAN.<\/p>\n<p>SEMEPUN PRAWIRA<\/p>\n<p>Jakarta<\/p>",
