Deputy Governor of Jakarta Rano Karno has raised concerns over recent\nsinkhole incidents in Lenteng Agung, South Jakarta, warning that similar\nevents could occur elsewhere in the capital. He pointed to aging\nunderground infrastructure, including PAM Jaya water pipes over 100\nyears old, which could weaken and cause sinkholes due to water\nleakage.<\/p>\n
\u201cSinkholes like those in Lenteng Agung could happen again,\u201d he said\nat Pos Bloc, Central Jakarta, on Saturday (30 May 2026). \u201cImagine pipes\nthat are 100 years old\u2014they\u2019re bound to deteriorate. It\u2019s no surprise if\nJakarta experiences sinkholes like this, not just in one place.\u201d<\/p>\n
Karno noted that sinkholes are not unique to Jakarta, with global\ncities like Bangkok and Tokyo having faced similar issues due to\nunderground infrastructure or geological conditions. \u201cThailand has\nexperienced it, Tokyo as well. In Thailand, the case was severe because\nthere\u2019s an MRT underneath,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta Provincial Government will continue monitoring\nunderground infrastructure to minimise the risk of sinkholes, as seen in\nLenteng Agung.
