        "content": "<p>SingTel seeks RI stake<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (Reuter): Singapore Telecommunications Ltd (SingTel)<br>\nis planning to take \"significant equity stakes\" in major<br>\ntelecommunications operators in Thailand and Indonesia, the<br>\nStraits Times newspaper reported yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>It quoted unidentified sources as saying SingTel was likely to<br>\nbuy into Indonesia's PT Telkom as well as either the Telephone<br>\nOrganisations of Thailand (TOT) or the Communications Authority<br>\nof Thailand (CAT).<\/p>\n<p>The newspaper said SingTel declined to disclose details of its<br>\nplans but quoted Singapore Telecom International chief Allen Lew<br>\nas saying he expected one deal to be announced later this year<br>\nand another early in 1998.<\/p>\n<p>\"These will be equity acquisitions in new companies, not<br>\ncompanies that we already have stakes in,\" Lew was quoted as<br>\nsaying.<\/p>",
