        "content": "<p>SingNet, Freei.Net plan free services<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (AFP): Leading Singapore and U.S. Internet service<br>\nproviders launched a strategic alliance Monday to develop free<br>\nInternet services in the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p>SingNet, a unit of giant Singapore Telecommunications Ltd.<br>\n(SingTel), and Freei.Net Asia Pacific, Inc., the regional unit of<br>\nthe fifth largest Internet service provider in the United States,<br>\nsaid they would generate revenue from on-line advertising,<br>\nsponsorship and other activities on the worldwide web.<\/p>\n<p>Their first service began Monday in Singapore with the launch<br>\nof Zapsurf Freei, which will power the free Internet service<br>\noffered by SingTel to its 1.82 million fixed phone line<br>\ncustomers.<\/p>\n<p>Under the alliance agreement, SingNet and Freei.Net Asia<br>\nPacific will use their technological strengths to develop free<br>\nInternet businesses in the Asia-Pacific region, a SingTel<br>\nstatement said.<\/p>\n<p>SingTel's multimedia chief Paul Chong said they hoped to<br>\nleverage on each other's expertise.<\/p>\n<p>Rod Hamlin, vice-president of business development for<br>\nFreei.Net (USA), said SingTel was the ideal partner to help his<br>\ncompany enter the untapped Asian markets.<\/p>\n<p>\"We believe this partnership will accelerate the pace of<br>\nInternet penetration and raise awareness of its benefits<br>\nconsiderably,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Alex Wong, President of Kuala Lumpur-based Freei.Net Asia-<br>\nPacific. Inc., said the long term prospects for Internet<br>\nadvertising revenue in the region were \"phenomenal\" and added<br>\nthat U.S. technology would bring targeted Internet advertising to<br>\nthe forefront of e-commerce promotional media.<\/p>\n<p>\"These are exciting times. It's going to be a lot of fun,\"<br>\nWong said.<\/p>",
