Singgih awaits Harmoko's word on 'Tempo' case<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Attorney General Singgih yesterday said he had
\nnot yet received word from Minister of Information Harmoko on
\nwhether to contest a high court ruling in the legal battle
\nagainst Tempo news magazine.<\/p>\n
Singgih, who represented Harmoko in the court case, said
\nHarmoko had not made his intention known.<\/p>\n
\"Whether or not an appeal is filed will mainly depend on the
\non the Minister of Information,\" he told reporters after
\ninstalling three top-ranking officials in the Attorney General
\nOffice.<\/p>\n
He said he had not yet received a copy of the high court's
\nverdict in the Tempo case.<\/p>\n
The Jakarta High Administrative Court last week upheld the
\nJakarta State Administrative Court's ruling last May that found
\nHarmoko's decision to revoke the publishing license of Tempo to
\nbe unconstitutional.<\/p>\n
Last May the lower court ordered the minister to return the
\nlicense to the magazine's proprietors.<\/p>\n
Harmoko filed an appeal with the high court and lost. Now his
\nonly recourse is to file an appeal with the Supreme Court. The
\nminister had not yet given a public response to the defeat.<\/p>\n
In June 1994 Tempo and two other weeklies, Editor and DeTik,
\nwere closed down by the government.<\/p>\n
During the court hearing, the government said the nature of
\nsome of Tempo's articles endangered national stability.<\/p>\n
Senior officials of the ministry said the government respected
\nthe court's decision but they did not rule out the possibility of
\nan appeal.<\/p>\n
Emphasized<\/p>\n
Both Singgih and Minister of Justice Oetojo Oesman have
\nemphasized the high court's ruling on the case is not final.<\/p>\n
\"The Minister of Information Harmoko can still file an appeal
\nto the Supreme Court. Let us wait and see whether he will use his
\nright to file the appeal,\" Oetojo said yesterday.<\/p>\n
Yesterday, Singgih installed I Nyoman Suwandha, formerly
\ndeputy attorney general for General Crimes, as Deputy for General
\nAffairs. Suwandha replaces Mohammad Hasan, who has retired.<\/p>\n
B.T.P. Siregar, formerly secretary to the Deputy Attorney
\nGeneral for Intelligence Affairs, was installed as Deputy
\nAttorney General for Special Crimes, replacing Suwandha.<\/p>\n
Suyoto, formerly secretary to the Deputy Attorney General for
\nSpecial Crimes, was appointed Deputy Attorney General for
\nDevelopment Affairs. He replaced Mochammad Sutadi who has
