Singapore's PMI grows<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE: A key index released on Wednesday showed Singapore's
\nkey manufacturing sector grew at a faster pace in December as
\norders and production increased.<\/p>\n
The forward-looking Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) was at
\n51.8 points in December, up 1.5 points from November, the
\nSingapore Institute of Purchasing and Materials Management said.<\/p>\n
A reading above 50 points shows an expanding economy.
\nSingapore's manufacturing sector is a key growth driver,
\naccounting for a quarter of gross domestic product.<\/p>\n
\"The increase of the overall PMI was attributed to an increase
\nin new orders and new export orders, higher production output as
\nwell as higher employment levels,\" the institute said in a
\nstatement.<\/p>\n
\"The overall stocks of finished goods, imports and input
\nprices also posted higher readings.\"<\/p>\n
In the all-important electronics sector, the index was
\nunchanged from November at 51.3 points.<\/p>\n
Analysts said the expansion of the manufacturing sector in
\nDecember would support preliminary estimates by the trade
\nministry that Singapore's economy grew 8.1 percent in 2004, its
