Singaporeans detained for visa violations<\/p>\n

Batam police arrested and detained on Wednesday three Singaporean
\nnationals for alleged visa violations, a senior police officer
\ndisclosed on Saturday.<\/p>\n
The three businessmen, who are still in detention, had
\nactually acquired social visit visas from the Indonesian
\ngovernment, but they were apparently violating the terms of the
\nvisa and were working in other areas not stipulated in their
\nvisas, said Comr. Ibrahim Tompo, a senior police officer at the
\nBarelang police in Batam, Riau Islands.<\/p>\n
The three businessmen were still being questioned over the
\nweekend by police investigators, said Ibrahim.<\/p>\n
The social visit permit, which expires after 14 days, applies
\nto both Indonesians or Singaporeans who visit each other's
\ncountries.<\/p>\n
Separately, chief of Batam Immigration Office I Gede Widiharta
\nconfirmed on the same day that the three people had been detained
\nfor permit violations.<\/p>\n
The three -- Goh Sin Chiang, Lee Soon Kiang and Goh Joo Koon
\n-- arrived in the city on Wednesday at the Batam Center
\nInternational seaport and shortly thereafter chaired a meeting
\nheld by a company in central Batam. \"They have no right
\nwhatsoever to work in Batam as they don't have adequate work
\ndocuments,\" said Widiharta.<\/p>\n
According to earlier statements, the three revealed that they
\nwere merely shareholders of a company in Batam, but they were not
\nactive shareholders so they were not informed of immigration
\nprocedures on Batam, said Widiharta.<\/p>",
