        "content": "<p>Singapore, Vietnam expand tech and manufacturing ties<\/p>\n<p>Both countries highlighted growing collaboration in science,\ntechnology and innovation during Vietnamese President To Lam\u2019s state\nvisit to Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE: Singapore and Vietnam are stepping up cooperation in areas\nlike advanced manufacturing and innovation, Minister-in-charge of Energy\nand Science and Technology Tan See Leng said on Friday (May 29).<\/p>\n<p>As part of the partnership, a new research centre will be established\nin Vietnam, Dr Tan said in a speech at the Vietnam-Singapore Tech\nConnect Initiative held at Raffles City Convention Centre.<\/p>\n<p>The project is among several initiatives announced during Vietnamese\nPresident To Lam\u2019s state visit to Singapore.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, Mr Lam met with Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong.\nThe two leaders witnessed the signing of several memorandums of\nunderstanding (MOUs), as ministers from both sides issued a joint\nstatement reaffirming their commitment to supply chain resilience, food\nsecurity and open trade flows amid the Middle East conflict.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lam\u2019s visit comes just over a year after Singapore-Vietnam ties\nwere upgraded to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. Singapore has\nremained Vietnam\u2019s largest source of foreign direct investment inflows\nsince 2020.<\/p>\n<p>An MOU was signed between Singapore\u2019s A*STAR Advanced Remanufacturing\nand Technology Centre and Vietnamese industrial park developer Becamex\nIDC to establish the Vietnam Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting within the Vietnam-Singapore Industrial Parks ecosystem, the\ncentre will provide a platform for companies in Vietnam to turn research\ninto \u201ctangible outcomes\u201d for their industry by piloting and deploying\nadvanced manufacturing solutions in real-world industrial settings, Dr\nTan said.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Tan noted both sides\u2019 investment and commitment to their\nrespective ecosystems.<\/p>\n<p>Under Singapore\u2019s Research, Innovation and Enterprise 2030 plan,\naround S$37 billion (US$29 billion) will be invested over the next five\nyears in areas including artificial intelligence, data, advanced\nmanufacturing, and semiconductors, with a focus on translating research\ninto real economic and societal outcomes.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnam\u2019s Politburo Resolution No 57 reflects a major national\ncommitment to using science, technology, innovation, and digital\ntransformation as key drivers of economic growth, he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are seeing strong momentum in Vietnam\u2019s development of artificial\nintelligence capabilities, alongside efforts to build up its\nsemiconductor ecosystem and advanced manufacturing base,\u201d Dr Tan\nadded.<\/p>\n<p>SUPPLY CHAIN RESILIENCE<\/p>\n<p>In a joint statement, Dr Tan and Vietnamese Minister of Industry and\nTrade Le Manh Hung also expressed their \u201cserious concern\u201d about the\nongoing situation in the Middle East and its implications for global\npeace and stability.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore and Vietnam collectively reaffirmed the importance of\nkeeping sea lanes and trade routes open, said Dr Tan and Dr Le.<\/p>\n<p>The ministers stressed their commitment to strengthening intra-ASEAN\ntrade and supply chain connectivity, and keeping their markets open and\nconnected.<\/p>\n<p>The countries \u201cwill ensure that our airports, seaports, and critical\ntrade infrastructure remain operational to minimise disruptions to trade\nflows\u201d, said Dr Tan and Dr Le.<\/p>\n<p>Both ministers also resolved to enhance cooperation in food security,\nincluding the implementation of a rice trade cooperation agreement.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe acknowledge the importance of avoiding unnecessary restrictive\nmeasures to promote the trade of rice, which is an essential\ncommodity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the face of heightened global uncertainty, we remain resolute in\nour commitment to work together in solidarity to uphold regional\nstability, strengthen economic resilience, and promote an international\norder based on international law, including the UN Charter,\u201d said Dr Tan\nand Dr Le.<\/p>\n<p>Vietnamese leader Mr Lam will open the Shangri-La Dialogue with a\nkeynote address later on Friday.<\/p>\n<p>Delegates and senior defence officials from 44 countries will attend\nthe latest edition of Asia\u2019s top defence and security forum, including\nUS Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, who is scheduled to speak on\nSaturday.<\/p>",
