        "content": "<p>Singapore to get GPS system<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (Reuter): Singapore, in its battle to avoid choking<br>\nits highways like so many other Asian cities, said yesterday it<br>\nwould establish the world&apos;s largest traffic monitoring system and<br>\nmake it accessible to drivers.<\/p>\n<p>The Land Transport Authority (LTA) said the plan would harness<br>\na satellite-based Global Positioning System (GPS) now used by<br>\ntaxis as a booking system.<\/p>\n<p>GPS devices installed in 7,500 taxis will use sensors to send<br>\ninformation on speed and direction to the LTA, which in turn will<br>\nmake it available through broadcast media, the Internet,<br>\ntelecommunication services, and commercial map-based CD-ROMs.<\/p>\n<p>The information should enable private car drivers and bus and<br>\ntruck operators to avoid congestion, the LTA said.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore has 3.6 million people, nearly all living on the<br>\n585-square-kilometer main island.<\/p>",
