Singapore will create a new reclaimed island. The island will combine\nthree small islands on the southern side of Singapore.<\/p>\n
As reported by Channel News Asia and The Straits Times on Monday\n(24\/8\/2026), the reclamation plan was announced by Singapore Prime\nMinister Lawrence Wong during his speech at the National Day Rally 2026\non Sunday (23\/8).<\/p>\n
The announcement began with Wong\u2019s account of the development of the\noil refining industry shortly after Singapore\u2019s independence. Wong said\nthat at the time, the refining industry was built on three islands:\nPulau Pesek, Pulau Ayer Chawan, and Pulau Merlimau.<\/p>\n
That project, he said, made Singapore a global refining centre. He\nsaid Singapore\u2019s founders subsequently developed a complete\npetrochemical industry alongside the refining hub.<\/p>\n
\u201cTo build it, we needed more space. So we carried out reclamation. We\nmerged several islands and built Jurong Island. Today, Jurong Island has\nbecome a global hub for energy and chemicals,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He said past investments have brought prosperity to the people of\nSingapore. Now, he said, global conditions present new challenges for\nSingapore.<\/p>\n
Wong said the Singapore Government is considering plans to support\nthe future. He then revealed a reclamation plan to merge three islands:\nPulau Semakau, Pulau Bukom, and Pulau Sudong.<\/p>\n
The three islands are located south of Jurong Island. According to\nhim, the reclamation plan is being carefully discussed.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is Semakau, which currently serves as a waste processing site.\nBukom, where our first refinery industry still operates. Pulau Sudong\nand several smaller islands here. In the coming decades, we want to\nmerge some of these islands into one large island just as we created\nJurong Island,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Meanwhile, Pulau Sudong has a runway used by the Singapore Armed\nForces during emergencies. Wong said the new reclaimed island will house\npower generation infrastructure to meet the needs of Singapore\u2019s new and\nadvanced industries in the future.<\/p>\n
Wong said the new island will also be used for Singapore\u2019s military\npurposes. In his speech, Wong also showed an illustration of the three\nislands to be merged.<\/p>\n
Eventually, a road will be built to connect the new reclaimed island\nwith Jurong Island. Singapore will also build a new road connecting\nJurong Island to mainland Singapore. The plan, Wong said, is targeted to\nhelp drive Singapore\u2019s economic development for the next 50 years and\nbeyond.<\/p>\n
