Singapore suspends third schoolgirl<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE: Stressing social cohesion after the recent detention
\nof 13 terror suspects, Singapore stuck to its hard line against
\nheadscarf-wearing Muslim schoolgirls on Monday by suspending a
\nthird child from class.<\/p>\n
Six-year-old Khairah Faroukh flouted a deadline to comply with
\nschool rules barring headscarves, or tudung, and other non-
\nstandard clothing. She left school minutes after entering the
\ncompound holding her father's hand.<\/p>\n
Two other Muslim girls were suspended on Feb. 4 for wearing
\nheadscarves to class.<\/p>\n
Khairah, clad in a blue pinafore and chest-length white
\ntudung, was given an extra week to comply with the dress code as
\nshe began wearing a headscarf two weeks into the school year.<\/p>\n
For devout Malay Muslims, the tudung is obligatory once girls
\nreach puberty but some parents have them wear it earlier. Nearly
\nall of the 450,000 Malays in largely Chinese Singapore are
\nMuslim, making Islam the second-largest religion after Buddhism.
