Singapore surgeon recognized as pioneer<\/p>\n
Singapore's pioneering transplant surgeon, Dr Susan Lim, has
\nbecome the first Singaporean and the youngest person to become a
\nFellow of Australia's Trinity College, the institution's highest
\nhonor, which is awarded to individuals of outstanding
\nachievement.<\/p>\n
She joins the highly distinguished, international community of
\nacademic, business and professional leaders, including Thailand's
\n\"condom crusader\" Senator Mechai Viravaidja, Dame Elisabeth
\nMurdoch and the Rt. Revd. Dr Peter Hollingworth.<\/p>\n
In 1990, Lim performed Asia's first successful liver
\ntransplant in Asia, and since then has continued to pioneer new
\ntechniques, including advancing the use of minimal access surgery
\nfor breast lumps and cancer, and championing robotic surgery.<\/p>\n
Today she is the founder, chair and CEO of Stem Cell
\nTechnologies (SCTi) which, in collaboration with the National
\nUniversity of Singapore's department of surgery, is conducting
\nresearch into the use of adult stem cells for a cure for
\ndiabetes.<\/p>\n
\"The field of medicine is so exciting and offers tremendous
\npotential for innovation and pioneering work that will help
\nmankind,\" Lim, who has been described as a medical dynamo by her
\npeers, said.<\/p>\n
Lim, and husband Deepak Sharma, head of Citigroup Private Bank
\nfor Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Japan, established the
\nIndiapore Trust Fund in 2001 to assist children from
\nunderprivileged areas in Singapore and the region.<\/p>\n
Singaporean-born Lim was selected in 1974 for the Colombo Plan
\nScholarship to study medicine in Australia, where she became a
\nresident student at Trinity College. She completed her MBBS with
\nfirst-class honors in 1979, sharing the prize for the highest
\naggregate marks in the first three pre-clinical years.<\/p>\n
In 1984 Lim became a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons
\nof Edinburgh, and the following year was awarded a Churchill
\nScholarship to pursue a doctorate in transplantation immunology
\nat the University of Cambridge.<\/p>\n
In 2000 she received Singapore's Spirit of the Century award
\nin recognition of her personal excellence and global
\nachievements. Lim was also chosen through a public poll to have
\nher hands immortalized at Madame Tussaud's in Singapore. -- JP<\/p>",
