Singapore Muslims asked to skip Valentine<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE (AP): Singapore Muslims have been advised by their
\nreligious leaders not to celebrate Valentine's Day on Sunday
\nbecause of its non-Islamic origins despite the modern
\ncommercialization of dining out and buying flowers, presents,
\ncandy or card for one's sweetheart.<\/p>\n
"While we are asked to respect other religions, we should not
\nimitate them," Murat Mohammed Aris, manger of the office of
\nSingapore's mufti, told The Straits Times in an interview
\npublished Saturday.<\/p>\n
He warned that young Muslim couples who go out for Valentine's
\nDay may get caught up in the romantic mood and risk overstepping
\nthe bounds of Islamic morality. That was especially so for
\nunmarried couples, who are required under Islam to have a third
\nparty with them, he said.<\/p>\n
"We had Muslims calling us to ask if they can celebrate
\nValentine's Day, as well as feedback from a few parents saying
\nthat their children are celebrating it," Murat told the Times.
