        "content": "<p>A new 50 km submarine cable connecting Singapore with the Indonesian\nisland of Batam has arrived in Batam, a step expected to strengthen\ndigital connectivity and support the growth of Southeast Asia\u2019s digital\neconomy, according to Singapore\u2019s Ministry of Trade and Industry on\nMonday (20 July), as reported by Xinhua.<\/p>\n<p>At the ceremony marking the landing of the Nongsa-Changi Cable (NCC),\nIndonesia\u2019s Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga\nHartarto, who attended the event, said that Indonesia\u2019s digital\ntransformation must be supported by tangible infrastructure and\never-stronger connectivity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis digital corridor will strengthen the digital economic value\nchains of both Indonesia and Singapore, while creating space for\ninnovation and technology-based economic activity,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Singapore\u2019s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade and\nIndustry, Gan Kim Yong, said the NCC will provide additional capacity of\nmore than 1.6 petabits per second and enable latency of under two\nmilliseconds between Batam and Singapore, according to a ministry\nstatement.<\/p>\n<p>Gan said the project will support the expansion of data centres and\nvarious digital services in Batam, as well as help businesses operate\nmore efficiently across borders.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis, in turn, will open up more opportunities for Singapore and\nIndonesia, as well as ASEAN, especially with the signing of the ASEAN\nDigital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA) later this year,\u201d he\nsaid.<\/p>\n<p>The cable forms part of a broader effort by both countries to deepen\neconomic cooperation and develop the Indonesian islands of Batam, Bintan\nand Karimun (BBK) into regional digital hubs.<\/p>\n<p>Gan noted that the proximity of the BBK region to Singapore allows\ncompanies to leverage the strengths of both countries, creating\nopportunities for cross-border cooperation, skills development and\ninvestment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSingapore offers global connectivity, a trusted business\nenvironment, and networks to companies and customers around the world.\nIndonesia, meanwhile, offers scale, talent, land for future growth, and\nsignificant potential in renewable energy,\u201d he added.<\/p>",
