Singapore, Indonesia launch defence alumni initiative<\/p>\n
Singapore Defence Minister Chan Chun Sing - who is in Jakarta for a\nworking visit - and his Indonesian counterpart Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin also\nreaffirmed their countries\u2019 commitment to explore new areas of bilateral\ncooperation.<\/p>\n
SINGAPORE: Singapore and Indonesia launched a new defence alumni\ninitiative on Tuesday (Jul 14), aimed at bringing together generations\nof military officers from both countries.<\/p>\n
Singapore Minister for Defence Chan Chun Sing and his Indonesian\ncounterpart Sjafrie Sjamsoeddin launched the Indonesia-Singapore\n(INDOSIN) Defence Alumni initiative in Jakarta, where they signed the\nalumni\u2019s initiating directive and unveiled its logo, said Singapore\u2019s\nMinistry of Defence (MINDEF).<\/p>\n
\u201cThe alumni brings together generations of Singapore Armed Forces\n(SAF) and Indonesian National Defence Forces (TNI) officers who have\nparticipated in each other\u2019s courses and training,\u201d said MINDEF.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt will enable these officers to maintain their personal and\nprofessional ties beyond active service, strengthening people-to-people\nties between Singapore and Indonesia across generations.\u201d<\/p>\n
The initiative is known as Persahabatan Alumni Pertahanan, or\nPERSAHAN, a name that combines the Indonesian words for \u201cfriendship\u201d and\n\u201cdefence alumni\u201d.<\/p>\n
The chiefs of the defence forces of Singapore and Indonesia will be\nthe co-presidents of the alumni to guide its plans and activities,\nMINDEF said. The co-presidents may also invite other SAF and TNI\nofficers who have contributed significantly to bilateral relations\nbetween the two armed forces.<\/p>\n
The alumni\u2019s membership will also include current and former defence\nattach\u00e9s to Singapore and Indonesia.<\/p>\n
The launch ceremony was attended by SAF and TNI officers from\nprevious cohorts of professional military courses, reflecting the close\npersonal and professional ties built between the two armed forces over\nthe past decades, MINDEF said.<\/p>\n
Lauding the event as another milestone of the defence relations\nbetween the two militaries, Indonesia\u2019s Chief of Defence Force General\nAgus Subiyanto said he was \u201chonoured to grace the launch of the\ninitiative, which will strengthen the relationship between individuals\nfrom the TNI and SAF, as well as both institutions in the future\u201d.<\/p>\n
During a meeting, both ministers reaffirmed their commitment to work\nclosely together and explore new areas of bilateral cooperation, MINDEF\nsaid.<\/p>\n
Both sides also agreed on the importance of continued collaboration\nthrough multilateral platforms such as the ASEAN Defence Ministers\u2019\nMeeting (ADMM), MINDEF added.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have always believed that true security is not achieved in\nisolation. It is best safeguarded through partnerships that promote\npeace and stability, while working closely with partners like the TNI,\u201d\nsaid Mr Chan.<\/p>\n
\u201cPartners like Indonesia and the TNI have been and will continue to\nbe critical to the security of this part of the world, and our\npartnership will continue to promote peace in the broader region.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Chan is in Indonesia from Tuesday to Wednesday.
