        "content": "<p>Singapore hails security pact<\/p>\n<p>SINGAPORE (Reuter): A senior Singapore minister was quoted by<br>\nlocal newspapers as saying yesterday his country regarded the<br>\nAustralia-Indonesia security pact as a building block in the<br>\nprocess of enhancing regional peace and security.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Prime Minister Tony Tan, who is also the defense<br>\nminister,  was quoted by the Strait Times as saying that he had<br>\nbeen briefed on the framework of the agreement, signed in Jakarta<br>\non Monday, by a special emissary from Australia.<\/p>\n<p>\"We have always taken the view that peace and security in the<br>\nregion are best ensured by having a web of strong bilateral<br>\nrelationships, complemented by overlapping multilateral security<br>\nstructures and processes,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>Tan also said Canberra had assured Singapore that the new pact<br>\ndid not detract in any way from its commitments to existing<br>\nsecurity agreements in the region.<\/p>\n<p>Currently, Singapore and Australia, together with Malaysia,<br>\nNew Zealand and Britain, are involved in the Five Power Defense<br>\nArrangement, set up in 1971.<\/p>",
