Simpruk residents complain<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Twenty residents of Simpruk in the Grogol
\nSelatan, South Jakarta, filed a complaint with the City Council
\nyesterday over the demolition of their houses.<\/p>\n
The residents, who claimed to represent the 138 families whose
\nhouses were torn down by officers from the South Jakarta Law and
\nOrder Office on Monday, asked members of the City Council's
\nCommission A, which is in charge of government affairs, to help
\nsettle the problem.<\/p>\n
\"Please help us because currently most of the residents are
\nhomeless and living on sidewalks along Jl. Sinabung,\" said
\nMariana Abdul Manap, one of the residents, with tears in her
\neyes.<\/p>\n
She said the residents feel cheated because last year they
\nwere given a permit to build houses on the site. After spending
\nmuch money on building, the houses were demolished.<\/p>\n
\"Why were we permitted to build on the site when in the end
\nthe officers demolished it?\" Mariana asked.<\/p>\n
In 1985, the residents were asked to leave the land because
\nits owner said they were squatters. Most people immediately left
\nthe site peacefully. But last year, after getting permission,
\nthey started to rebuild their houses.<\/p>\n
The South Jakarta mayoralty demolished the 138 families' homes
\non Monday to make way for an expansion of a luxury condominium
\nproject.<\/p>\n
Commission Chairman told residents that he will investigate
\nthe matter and summon the parties involved, including those who
\nissued the permit to rebuild their houses. (yns)<\/p>",
