        "content": "<p>Sihanouk not against ASEAN<\/p>\n<p>PHNOM PENH (Reuter): King Norodom Sihanouk is not opposed to<br>\nCambodia's entry into the Association of South East Asian<br>\nNations, the royal palace said yesterday.<\/p>\n<p>But the king, in documents released by the royal palace, said<br>\nhe fears the social and economic costs of joining the powerful<br>\nregional bloc.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month the king's son, co-Premier Prince Norodom<br>\nRanariddh, was quoted as saying Sihanouk regarded ASEAN as a<br>\npolitical and military alliance and had strong reservations about<br>\nentering the group.<\/p>\n<p>\"I am certainly very old but not 'senile' to the point of<br>\nbelieving that the calling of ASEAN is of a military nature. I<br>\nknow full well that this calling is of an economic order,\" the<br>\nking said.<\/p>\n<p>ASEAN diplomats in Phnom Penh said this week that they expect<br>\nthat Cambodia. Laos, and Myanmar to join this year, possibly as<br>\nearly as July when the regional club celebrates its 30th<br>\nanniversary.<\/p>",
