'Sie Jie' lottery tickets mushroom in Batam<\/p>\n
BATAM, Riau: Police officers in Batam, Riau are allegedly
\nproviding protection to brokers of Sie Jie lottery tickets in
\nexchange for cash.<\/p>\n
Lottery traders in Nagoya and Windsor told Antara on Monday
\nthat their bosses paid protection money to police officers every
\nmonth.<\/p>\n
"We are free to sell the tickets and never get any problems
\nfrom police officers," brokers in Nagoya and Windsor said.<\/p>\n
Police would not comment on the claims.<\/p>\n
The traders said the lottery lured customers from all walks of
\nlife in Batam, including government officials and private sector
\nemployees. Tickets, which are readily available in food stalls
\nand coffee shops, are sold for Rp 1,000 per number.<\/p>\n
The Sie Jie lottery from Singapore is drawn on Sundays,
\nMondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays.<\/p>\n
This gambling business, which brings gambling bosses billions
\nof rupiah every month, is sponsored by local gamblers and
\ngambling businessmen from Jakarta.<\/p>\n
"We are always the source of money if the officers receive
\nguests or have important events in Batam," said one of the Sie
