West Java Regional Legislative Council (DPRD) Commission I member\nSidkon Djampi has reminded the public to be increasingly critical in\nfacing the heavy flow of information in the post-truth era.<\/p>\n
The ease of digital technology allows information to spread quickly,\nbut not all circulating information has a factual basis that can be\naccounted for.<\/p>\n
According to Sidkon, the post-truth era is marked by a condition in\nwhich opinion, emotion, and personal belief often have more influence\nover the formation of public views than objective facts. This is a\nserious challenge, especially amid the massive use of social media.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow the public must be increasingly intelligent in receiving\ninformation. Do not let something that is continuously repeated on\nsocial media then be considered a truth, even though it is not\nnecessarily based on facts,\u201d said Sidkon on Saturday (15\/8\/2026).<\/p>\n
He assessed that the development of digital technology basically\nprovides many benefits. The public can obtain information quickly and\nhas a wider space to express opinions.<\/p>\n
However, this ease also brings consequences in the form of an\nincreased potential for the spread of hoaxes, disinformation, and\nnarratives deliberately constructed to influence public opinion.<\/p>\n
Therefore, Sidkon encouraged the public to make a habit of verifying\nbefore believing or spreading information. The source of the news, the\ncontext of the information, and the credibility of the party conveying\nit need to be taken into consideration.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo not easily believe just because the information matches what we\nbelieve. It must be checked: who the source is, what the facts are, and\nwhat the context is,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
Sidkon emphasised the importance of the role of families, educational\ninstitutions, government, mass media, and civil society in building\ndigital literacy. The ability to sort information is an important part\nof citizens\u2019 skills amid technological development.<\/p>\n
He hoped the public would not only become consumers of information,\nbut also be able to become responsible users of digital media. A\ncritical attitude is needed so that public space is not filled with\nmisleading information that has the potential to trigger conflict.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the post-truth era, what is needed is not only a public that\nquickly obtains information, but a public that is able to distinguish\nbetween facts, opinions, and information manipulation,\u201d said Sidkon.<\/p>\n
According to him, mass media also has an important position in\nmaintaining the quality of public space. Journalism that prioritises\nverification and balance is considered still needed as a reference for\nthe public amid the heavy flow of information from various digital\nplatforms.<\/p>\n
Sidkon added that technological progress should be followed by an\nincrease in public maturity in using it. With strong digital literacy,\nthe public is expected not to be easily provoked by information whose\ntruth has not been verified.<\/p>\n
\u201cDo not let technology that should make life easier instead become a\nmeans to spread lies.
