Director Sidharta Tata has officially ventured into the action film\ngenre with his latest film titled Ikatan Darah. After previously\nsucceeding with the serial Pertaruhan, Tata described this film as a\nlong-held ambition that has finally gained momentum for realisation.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I first made films, my aim was to create an action film, but\nthe opportunity never materialised, so I channelled that desire through\nanother medium, namely serialised television,\u201d Tata explained during a\npress conference for the release of a clip and poster at Plaza Senayan\non Wednesday, 11 March.<\/p>\n
In his debut, Tata emphasised the importance of strict disciplinary\nsystems during the production process. He acknowledged learning\nextensively about applying world film industry standards within the\ncontext of Indonesian cinema.<\/p>\n
\u201cI learned a great deal about how to implement disciplinary systems\nin making action films, how to apply Hollywood standards within the\nfilm. All of this became invaluable learning,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n
The transition from intuition-based directing towards more mature\ntechnical approaches was also facilitated by international action actor\nIko Uwais. Through collaboration with Uwais\u2019s team, Tata began\nimplementing proper technical guidance, from actor preparation,\noptimising pace, to managing action sequences in meticulous detail.<\/p>\n
Iko Uwais added that his team prepared storyboards as a guide before\nfilming commenced to minimise complications during the execution of\naction sequences on set.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere are several techniques taught by Iko that subsequently helped\nme discover how to maintain the energy of the actors,\u201d Tata added.<\/p>\n
A notable feature of Ikatan Darah is the absence of modern firearms\nsuch as pistols. Instead, the film extensively features the use of sharp\nweapons such as machetes.<\/p>\n
Tata made this decision based on cultural background and his\nempirical experience as a regional native.<\/p>\n
\u201cIndonesian culture during my time existed in a world of that\nnature\u2014I never knew pistols. From what I observed based on my empirical\nexperience, sharp weapons, whatever their form\u2014machetes and so forth\u2014are\nauthentic,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n
Tata also provided space for actors to explore their characters\norganically. Abdurrahman Arif, who plays the character Boris, said he\nwas given freedom to adjust his costume and weapons.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe machete was eventually replaced with a lawn-cutting blade,\u201d Arif\nstated.<\/p>\n
Similarly, Teuku Rifnu Wikana, who plays the character Pastor named\nPrimbon, mentioned conducting extensive research with the costume design\nteam to ensure the accuracy of his character\u2019s appearance without\nabandoning film aesthetics.<\/p>\n
