Sidewalk vendors crowd Blok M shopping area<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Hundreds of street vendors are indiscriminately
\noperating along alleyways and roads at the Blok M shopping area,
\nregardless of the prohibition from the South Jakarta mayoralty.<\/p>\n
Many operations have been conducted by the mayoralty to drive
\nthe vendors away because their operations cause chaotic conditions
\nin the area.<\/p>\n
The street vendors are causing obstructions because they
\ndominate the sidewalks and parking lots in the complex, forcing
\npedestrians and cars to share the crowded roads.<\/p>\n
South Jakarta Mayoralty spokesman M. Yanis told The Jakarta
\nPost on Saturday that the increasing number of vendors in the area
\nis caused mainly by the limited number of similar operations
\nagainst them because most law and order officers of the mayoralty
\nare currently deployed in the Pasar Minggu area.<\/p>\n
The deployment of officers to Pasar Minggu is intended mainly
\nto help secure the area, which is also full of illegal vendors, he
\nsaid, adding that the mayoralty is conducting a beautification
\nproject there.<\/p>\n
Yanis explained that under the beautification project in Pasar
\nMinggu, all traders operating along road sides in the area are
\nrequired to operated only inside the market area.<\/p>\n
\"All officers are there to prevent street vendors from going
\nback to their previous locations,\" he said.<\/p>\n
He explained that the beautification project in Pasar Minggu
\ninvolves the cooperation of various offices, including city parks
\nand city public works as well as the city land transportation
\ncontrol agency under the coordination of the city administration.<\/p>\n
The project includes the construction of new parks, sidewalks
\nand outdoor advertising facilities.<\/p>\n
\"The city office of public works has just completed the
\nrepairs of the water ducts and roads near Pasar Minggu bus
\nterminal,\" Yanis said.<\/p>\n
The project is fully financed by the city administration, he
\nsaid, but did not give details.<\/p>\n
\"We are not ignoring the situation in Blok M. We will regulate
\nvendors in the area as soon as our operation in Pasar Minggu is
\ncompleted,\" Yanis said.<\/p>\n
The vendors, who sell various merchandises ranging from bags
\nand clothes, to a wide variety of fruits, acknowledged that the
\nmayoralty has not been launching operations, to chase them away
\nfrom the location, over the last few months.<\/p>\n
Rizal, a sock trader, told the Post that previously the
\nmayoralty used to deploy officers to arrest the vendors in the area
\nand confiscate their merchandise.<\/p>\n
Yanis stressed that the mayoralty will not hesitate to take
\nstern measure against those found guilty of violating the
