Siamese twins to return home in a week: Doctors<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Six-month-old Siamese twin boys who have
\nsuccessfully undergone surgery for their separation are expected
\nto leave Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital within a week, their
\ndoctors said.<\/p>\n
Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, the team of doctors,
\nincluding the hospital's director, Hermansyur, said the two-hour
\noperation on Barkah and Slamet was carried out on Feb. 28 after
\nfive months of observation and treatment.<\/p>\n
The twins were congenitally joined at the abdomen.<\/p>\n
\"The most critical time during the surgery was the separation
\nof their livers, which needed an incision of 44.5 square
\ncentimeters,\" Hermansyur said.<\/p>\n
He said the livers were united but there were separate veins
\nand intestines.<\/p>\n
\"The operation costs, including medical treatment before and
\nafter the surgery, totaled Rp 100 million (US13,500), with the
\nentire amount covered by the hospital.\"<\/p>\n
Hermansyur added that the treatment and operation on the
\ntwins, who were born to relatively poor Bekasi parents, involved
\na team of more than 80 doctors and nurses from different
\ndepartments, including plastic surgery, radiology, anesthesiology
\nand pathology.<\/p>\n
The twins have not shown complications from the surgery.<\/p>\n
\"There was only minor bleeding on the first day after the
\noperation, which has already been cured,\" Hermansyur said, adding
\nthat the babies' organs were functioning well.<\/p>\n
The boys were born by caesarean section on Sept. 12 last year
\nat Hermina Hospital in Bekasi, east of here, with a total weight
\nof 5.1 kilograms and 48 centimeters in length.<\/p>\n
Three days after the birth, the two were admitted to Cipto
\nMangunkusumo for treatment prior to the operation.<\/p>\n
On the day before the February operation, the boys had gained
\nan extra 14 kilograms since their birth, Hermansyur said.<\/p>\n
Their housewife mother, Fatonah, 25, also attended the
\nmeeting. Absent was her husband, Sardi, 30, now a conductor on a
\npublic bus.<\/p>\n
Fatonah said Sardi was an ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver until
\nthey decided to sell the vehicle to cover the hospital bills of
\ntheir twins before the boys were admitted to Cipto Mangunkusumo.<\/p>\n
The couple has a six-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n
Fatonah recalled: \"When I was told by a doctor that I would
\nhave twins, I had nothing to say because I knew that it would
\nrequire a lot of money.\"<\/p>\n
BArkah and Slamet are the 14th Siamese twins handled by teams
\nof doctors at the state Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital. (06)<\/p>",
