        "content": "<p>Siamese twins to return home in a week: Doctors<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): Six-month-old Siamese twin boys who have<br>\nsuccessfully undergone surgery for their separation are expected<br>\nto leave Cipto Mangunkusumo General Hospital within a week, their<br>\ndoctors said.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a news conference on Tuesday, the team of doctors,<br>\nincluding the hospital's director, Hermansyur, said the two-hour<br>\noperation on Barkah and Slamet was carried out on Feb. 28 after<br>\nfive months of observation and treatment.<\/p>\n<p>The twins were congenitally joined at the abdomen.<\/p>\n<p>\"The most critical time during the surgery was the separation<br>\nof their livers, which needed an incision of 44.5 square<br>\ncentimeters,\" Hermansyur said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the livers were united but there were separate veins<br>\nand intestines.<\/p>\n<p>\"The operation costs, including medical treatment before and<br>\nafter the surgery, totaled Rp 100 million (US13,500), with the<br>\nentire amount covered by the hospital.\"<\/p>\n<p>Hermansyur added that the treatment and operation on the<br>\ntwins, who were born to relatively poor Bekasi parents, involved<br>\na team of more than 80 doctors and nurses from different<br>\ndepartments, including plastic surgery, radiology, anesthesiology<br>\nand pathology.<\/p>\n<p>The twins have not shown complications from the surgery.<\/p>\n<p>\"There was only minor bleeding on the first day after the<br>\noperation, which has already been cured,\" Hermansyur said, adding<br>\nthat the babies' organs were functioning well.<\/p>\n<p>The boys were born by caesarean section on Sept. 12 last year<br>\nat Hermina Hospital in Bekasi, east of here, with a total weight<br>\nof 5.1 kilograms and 48 centimeters in length.<\/p>\n<p>Three days after the birth, the two were admitted to Cipto<br>\nMangunkusumo for treatment prior to the operation.<\/p>\n<p>On the day before the February operation, the boys had gained<br>\nan extra 14 kilograms since their birth, Hermansyur said.<\/p>\n<p>Their housewife mother, Fatonah, 25, also attended the<br>\nmeeting. Absent was her husband, Sardi, 30, now a conductor on a<br>\npublic bus.<\/p>\n<p>Fatonah said Sardi was an ojek (motorcycle taxi) driver until<br>\nthey decided to sell the vehicle to cover the hospital bills of<br>\ntheir twins before the boys were admitted to Cipto Mangunkusumo.<\/p>\n<p>The couple has a six-year-old daughter.<\/p>\n<p>Fatonah recalled: \"When I was told by a doctor that I would<br>\nhave twins, I had nothing to say because I knew that it would<br>\nrequire a lot of money.\"<\/p>\n<p>BArkah and Slamet are the 14th Siamese twins handled by teams<br>\nof doctors at the state Cipto Mangunkusumo hospital.
