        "content": "<p>SI denies involvement in smuggling attemp<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): I Nyoman Moena, the president of PT Surveyor<br>\nIndonesia (SI), ruled out the involvement of the surveying<br>\ncompany's officials in the recent failed attempt to smuggle a<br>\ncontainer of automotive wheel rims from Taiwan into the country.<\/p>\n<p>Moena said yesterday that the Taiwanese exporter replaced the<br>\ncontents of the container already checked by SI officials with<br>\nautomotive wheel rims by altering the box's seals.<\/p>\n<p>\"The exporter has admitted the offense and had been fined,\" he<br>\ntold reporters following the inauguration of the new headquarters<br>\nof the Association of Indonesian Importers (Ginsi).<\/p>\n<p>He said the container was originally filled with PVC pipes but<br>\nits exporter replaced them with wheel rims immediately after the<br>\ninspection had been carried out.<\/p>\n<p>Moena declined to identify both the exporter and importer. He<br>\nalso did not want to speculate on the possible collusion between<br>\nthe two.<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on SI's plan to take over the whole jobs of pre-<br>\nshipment inspection on Indonesia's imports from the Swiss Society<br>\nGenerale de Surveillance (SGS) in December this year, Moena said<br>\nthat every thing was running as scheduled.<\/p>\n<p>\"There are only four remaining countries -- Japan, the United<br>\nStates, South Korea and China -- where inspection of Indonesia's<br>\nimports are still carried out by SGS,\" he said, adding that the<br>\nopening of branch offices in those four countries is being<br>\nprepared.<\/p>\n<p>He said that SI has so far handled the inspection of imports<br>\nat ports of loading in 13 countries including Britain, France,<br>\nItaly, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, Singapore, Malaysia,<br>\nAustralia, Hongkong, Taiwan, Canada and Thailand.<\/p>\n<p>\"I am optimistic that we will be able to handle all the pre-<br>\nshipment inspection jobs before the end of this year,\" he said.<\/p>\n<p>SI is 76 percent owned by the government, 20 percent by SGS<br>\nand four percent by PT Sucofindo, a state-owned firm, which is<br>\nresponsible for the pre-shipment inspection of exports.<\/p>\n<p>The government assigned SGS to conduct custom inspections in<br>\n1985.(hen)<\/p>",
