        "content": "<p>Shuttlers selected for 1996 Olympics<\/p>\n<p>JAKARTA (JP): The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI)<br>\nselected 36 players to be groomed for the 1996 Olympic Games in<br>\nAtlanta, the U.S., as part of their plan to retain at least two<br>\nof the single gold medals won in Barcelona.<\/p>\n<p>PBSI&apos;s executive chairman and Olympic project officer<br>\nSumaryono said yesterday that the male and female shuttlers, who<br>\nare among the country&apos;s top shuttlers, were called up to join the<br>\ncentralized training center at the end of December last year<br>\nbased on their performances throughout 1994.<\/p>\n<p>&quot;The players were sorted out after a series of consultations<br>\ninvolving both top PBSI officials and coaches,&quot; said Sumaryono,<br>\nadding that preparations for the Games would cost PBSI Rp 2<br>\nbillion (US$917,000).<\/p>\n<p>&quot;Changes could very possibly be made before we decide on the<br>\ndefinite Olympic team,&quot; Sumaryono added.<\/p>\n<p>The International Badminton Federation (IBF) has ruled that<br>\nonly the world&apos;s 16 best at the end of this year would qualify<br>\nfor the Olympics. Each country has a maximum of two<br>\nrepresentatives, but Indonesia was given an exception of fielding<br>\nthree players.<\/p>\n<p>Indonesia carved out a piece of Olympic history when Alan<br>\nBudikusuma and Susi Susanti took the badminton golds in Barcelona<br>\nin 1992.<\/p>\n<p>The triumphant Thomas Cup squad comprising world number one<br>\nArdy Wiranata, Hariyanto Arbi, Joko Suprianto, Hermawan Susanto,<br>\nworld doubles team number one Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky and<br>\ntheir number two pair of Bambang Suprianto and Rudy Gunawan all<br>\nwon the call-up.<\/p>\n<p>Olympic men&apos;s singles winner Alan, who was dropped from the<br>\nThomas Cup and Asian Games contingent, was given a second chance<br>\nto don the national colors at the world&apos;s biggest sporting<br>\nextravaganza.<\/p>\n<p>PBSI, however, shied away from former leading singles player<br>\nFung Permadi, saying that Fung was considered to have no prospect<br>\ndue to his dropping form.<\/p>\n<p>The singles team also will include Lioe Tiong Ping and<br>\nHendrawan. The doubles squad will have two rising couples of<br>\nDenny Kantono\/Antonius and Ade Sutrisna and Chandra Wijaya.<\/p>\n<p>World badminton queen Susi Susanti will lead a 17-strong team,<br>\nwith Indonesia&apos;s victorious Uber Cup players highlighting its<br>\nlineup.<\/p>\n<p>Mia Audina, Yuliani Sentosa, Yuni Kartika, Finarsih, Lili<br>\nTampi, Zelin Resiana, Eliza join the training stint along with<br>\nIka Henny, Kristin Yunita, Meiluawati, Lydia Djaelawidjaja,<br>\nNonong Denis Zanati, Enny Octaviani, Dede Hasanah, Minarti Timur<br>\nand Sri Untari.(amd)<\/p>",
