Shuttlers selected for 1996 Olympics<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): The Badminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI)
\nselected 36 players to be groomed for the 1996 Olympic Games in
\nAtlanta, the U.S., as part of their plan to retain at least two
\nof the single gold medals won in Barcelona.<\/p>\n
PBSI's executive chairman and Olympic project officer
\nSumaryono said yesterday that the male and female shuttlers, who
\nare among the country's top shuttlers, were called up to join the
\ncentralized training center at the end of December last year
\nbased on their performances throughout 1994.<\/p>\n
"The players were sorted out after a series of consultations
\ninvolving both top PBSI officials and coaches," said Sumaryono,
\nadding that preparations for the Games would cost PBSI Rp 2
\nbillion (US$917,000).<\/p>\n
"Changes could very possibly be made before we decide on the
\ndefinite Olympic team," Sumaryono added.<\/p>\n
The International Badminton Federation (IBF) has ruled that
\nonly the world's 16 best at the end of this year would qualify
\nfor the Olympics. Each country has a maximum of two
\nrepresentatives, but Indonesia was given an exception of fielding
\nthree players.<\/p>\n
Indonesia carved out a piece of Olympic history when Alan
\nBudikusuma and Susi Susanti took the badminton golds in Barcelona
\nin 1992.<\/p>\n
The triumphant Thomas Cup squad comprising world number one
\nArdy Wiranata, Hariyanto Arbi, Joko Suprianto, Hermawan Susanto,
\nworld doubles team number one Ricky Subagja and Rexy Mainaky and
\ntheir number two pair of Bambang Suprianto and Rudy Gunawan all
\nwon the call-up.<\/p>\n
Olympic men's singles winner Alan, who was dropped from the
\nThomas Cup and Asian Games contingent, was given a second chance
\nto don the national colors at the world's biggest sporting
\nextravaganza.<\/p>\n
PBSI, however, shied away from former leading singles player
\nFung Permadi, saying that Fung was considered to have no prospect
\ndue to his dropping form.<\/p>\n
The singles team also will include Lioe Tiong Ping and
\nHendrawan. The doubles squad will have two rising couples of
\nDenny Kantono\/Antonius and Ade Sutrisna and Chandra Wijaya.<\/p>\n
World badminton queen Susi Susanti will lead a 17-strong team,
\nwith Indonesia's victorious Uber Cup players highlighting its
\nlineup.<\/p>\n
Mia Audina, Yuliani Sentosa, Yuni Kartika, Finarsih, Lili
\nTampi, Zelin Resiana, Eliza join the training stint along with
\nIka Henny, Kristin Yunita, Meiluawati, Lydia Djaelawidjaja,
\nNonong Denis Zanati, Enny Octaviani, Dede Hasanah, Minarti Timur
