Shuttler Ellen resigns from national squad<\/p>\n
JAKARTA (JP): Following her poor performance at the All
\nEngland Championships two weeks ago, Indonesia's number two
\nwomen's shuttler, Ellen Angelina, resigned from the Indonesian
\nBadminton Center.<\/p>\n
Ellen submitted her resignation on Monday to officials at the
\nBadminton Association of Indonesia (PBSI).<\/p>\n
\"Ellen submitted her resignation letter to me, (PBSI) chairman
\nSubagyo Hadisiswoyo, (PBSI) official in charge of athlete
\ndevelopment Mangombar Ferdinand Siregar and (PBSI) training
\ndirector Christian Hadinata,\" women's singles coach Verawaty
\nFadjrin said on Tuesday.<\/p>\n
\"She explained in the letter that she wanted to resume her
\nstudies and also that she was getting older and was no longer
\nsatisfied with her level of play.<\/p>\n
\"I think it is the best solution because it would be a waste
\nof time for her and useless for me (to coach her) if she already
\nhad the intention to resign.\"<\/p>\n
Of the three national women's shuttlers who competed in the
\nAll England, Ellen had the poorest result, being routed by
\nunknown Chinese shuttler Wang Rong 11-0, 11-3.<\/p>\n
Ellen had reportedly lost her desire to train since returning
\nhome from England, and was skipping her afternoon training
\nsessions.<\/p>\n
With her resignation, Indonesia now has three active women's
\nsingles shuttlers at the badminton center: Lidya Djaelawidjaja,
\nYuli Marfuah and Atu Rosalina.<\/p>\n
Two other women's shuttlers, Cindana Hartono and Ninik
\nMasrikah, are restricted to limited training because of injuries.<\/p>\n
Christian said he had received Ellen's resignation and
\naccepted it as an honest decision.<\/p>\n
\"Our women's singles division is indeed weak and Ellen
\nrealized her own weaknesses. It is a similar situation to the
\nmen's doubles pair of Ricky Achmad Subagja and Antonius Halim,
\nwho decided to resign from the center earlier this year,\" he was
\nquoted as saying by Antara.<\/p>\n
\"We will soon select junior shuttlers to fill the vacancy left
\nby Ellen. It will depend to their potential and suggestions by
\ncoaches and athlete development officials.\"<\/p>\n
Mixed reaction<\/p>\n
In a separate matter, national shuttlers were mixed in their
\nreaction to the postponement of the 2000 World Grand Prix Finals,
\nwhich were scheduled to take place from March 28 to April 1 in
\nBrunei.<\/p>\n
Men's doubles shuttler Candra Wijaya said he was disappointed
\nby the delay because he felt his form was peaking in time for the
\nevent.<\/p>\n
\"I arranged my training schedule to reach my peak for the
\nGrand Prix Finals at the scheduled date, although I have set
\nmyself a higher target for the World Championship to be played in
\nSeville, Spain, in May,\" he told The Jakarta Post after a
\ntraining session at the national badminton center in Cipayung,
\nEast Jakarta.<\/p>\n
\"However, I will take the advantage of being able to
\nconcentrate more on the Japan Open from April 3 to April 8.\"<\/p>\n
Candra's doubles partner for the Grand Prix Finals, Tony
\nGunawan, said he regretted the cancellation because it meant a
\nlost opportunity to improve his world ranking with new partner
\nHalim Heryanto.<\/p>\n
\"If only we knew that the Grand Prix Finals would be
\ncanceled, we could have competed in the Swiss Open to improve our
\nranking for the World Championships in May,\" said Tony, who
\nrecently won the All England with Halim Heryanto.<\/p>\n
\"Well, look at the positive side. We can prepare better for
\nthe Japan Open. The problem is when will they have the 2001 Grand
\nPrix Finals?\"<\/p>\n
Candra and Tony are in a difficult group for the Grand Prix
\nFinals, with compatriots Flandy Limpele and Eng Hian, Choong Tan
\nFook and Lee Wan Wah of Malaysia, and Kim Dong-moon and Ha Tae-
\nkwon of South Korea.<\/p>\n
Mixed doubles shuttler Minarti Timur said she had trained with
\nformer partner Tri Kusheryanto for the event and was confused by
\nthe delay.<\/p>\n
\"(The International Badminton Federation) delayed the Grand
\nPrix Finals several times and now plan to stage last year's event
\nin August. If the 2001 Finals are rescheduled for December, then
