Shun the advice on terror from U.S.<\/p>\n
Following the bomb blasts in Bali on Oct. 12, there has now
\nbeen a call for the establishment of an anti-terrorism law or for
\nthe president to issue a government decree in lieu of the law.<\/p>\n
Is an emergency act really necessary? The Bali tragedy has
\nharmed Indonesia more than any other country, such as the United
\nStates or Australia, which always say they are targeted by
\nterrorists. Bali is a showcase and symbol for Indonesia in the
\ninternational arena.<\/p>\n
Therefore, the government must act in line with only our
\nnational interests and must not follow the advice given by big
\ncountries. In its fight against terrorism, Indonesia must never
\njust follow every step proposed by the U.S.<\/p>\n
Terrorists kill civilians and this is a criminal offense, for
\nwhich we have our Criminal Code. We can deal with terrorists just
\nusing this Criminal Code.<\/p>\n
If we study the anti-terrorism bill we will find that it
\nresembles our Criminal Code. The only difference -- and many
\npeople fear this possibility -- is that the bill authorizes the
\npresident to set up an ad hoc court. This can be dangerous as
\nthe power holder can do away with civilian's freedom on the
\npretext of fighting terrorism. Examples abound in relation with
\nthe Patriot Act in the U.S. or the Internal Security Act in
\nMalaysia and Singapore or even the anti-subversion law in
\nIndonesia under Soeharto.<\/p>\n
To prevent a terrorist act, Indonesia must improve its
\nintelligence capability and work together with the International
\nCriminal Court although the U.S. hates the latter.<\/p>\n
